Universe Sandbox

Have you ever imagined what it would...

Have you ever imagined what it would be like to have complete control over the Universe, like setting Earth on a collision course for the sun? If this sounds like your cup of tea, then Universe Sandbox is the game for you.
Universe Sandbox is an indie title developed by Dan Dixon that allows the player to control the many galaxies in the universe as well as create their own. Using key elements of physics such as velocity and mass, you decide how the universe operates. It feels like Garry’s Mod except to a scale of infinite. The possibilities are endless in this game.

You can create a lovely new solar system, make a few changes, and watch them all head straight to the center at the same speed on impact to create a fantastic looking explosion. You can place an exploding star next to Jupiter and, again, watch it blow up. I’m not sure if that’s truly the aim of Universe Sandbox, but I like to make things blow up so I certainly got my fix of destruction from the wonderful playing field called space.

The aesthetics of this game create a lovely environment thanks to the fantastic colours in which they display. Each galaxy looks beautiful and full of life. The graphics may not be brilliant, but the aesthetics make up for it.

Each galaxy appears to be doing a thing of its own and leaves you to decide what to change. The ability to create a universe and individual planets within is an original and fun new feature to gaming. This game also gives the player the option to turn planets into different objects. Turning Earth into a soccer ball and imagining the people down there screaming in terror at the sudden change and loss of oxygen is a real delight to partake in.

Universe Sandbox does have a really steep learning curve. It is going to take you some time to get used to the controls and how each key physics elements blend together. There are quite a few moments of trial and error. There is a great section in the menu called ‘Fun things to do’ that gives tutorials on how to make the Earth the size of the Sun or how to turn the Earth into a soccer ball and, of course, how to blow stuff up (my favorite). Players who have a basic understanding of physics and its terminology will have an easier time and will build a bigger understanding and come to terms with how the game works thanks to the well designed tutorial system. It will take awhile to achieve the results you are after in Universe Sandbox, but they are well worth the time to complete.

Universe Sandbox won’t have much of an impact on the industry. It isn’t going to appeal to many people due to its steep learning curve and important physics elements. For those who are willing to wait it out and have the patience to learn will find this game quite a gem. Most will pass on this title though. I would recommend this to anyone wanting to have some fun, but only if they are willing to wait for it. I enjoyed it. I’m glad I took the time to learn the ropes of this game. The game has charm and is quite innovative. If you feel like becoming master of the universe for awhile definitely pick this indie title up.

I give it 7.5/10
